Tom Daschle Forgets To Pay Taxes
Former U.S. Senator from South Dakoter and former Minority Leader Tom Dasshole was caught failing to pay over $128,000 in taxes. LA Times:
Daschle failed to pay $128,000 in taxes over three years in private life when he was getting paid $1 million a year to offer advice to rich people.
[...]
...committee records indicate he filed amended returns for 2005, 2006 and 2007 just 29 days ago and has so far paid more than $140,000 in back taxes and interest.
[...]
[Dasshole] spokeswoman, Jenny Backus [said]: "Sen. Daschle is embarrassed and disappointed by these errors."
Part of the $128k he "forgot" to pay is related to a personal car and driver. The NY Times (so it must be true!):
President Obama’s pick for health and human services secretary, Tom Daschle, failed to pay more than $128,000 in taxes, partly for free use of a car and driver that had been provided to him by a prominent businessman and Democratic fund-raiser, administration officials said Friday.
[...]
In a financial disclosure statement filed this month with the Office of Government Ethics, Mr. Daschle reported that he had received large amounts of income from InterMedia, including more than $2 million in consulting fees and $182,520 in the form of “company-provided transportation.”
[...]
The car and driver were not Mr. Daschle’s only problems. The Finance Committee said he failed to report consulting income of $83,333 on his 2007 tax return and overstated the deductions to which he was entitled for charitable contributions from 2005 to 2007. In his amended tax returns, he reduced the deductions by $14,963.
both "embarrassed and disappointed" by his "errors."
And we have Dasshole's past - both recent and long term - as a lobbyist. He described himself as a "lobbyist" on March 22, 2005, on NPR's Talk Of The Nation.
Dasshole's three years at the law firm Alston & Bird was as a LOBBYIST. MLive:
He also became an adviser to the law and lobbying firm Alston & Bird, which paid him $2.1 million in wages last year and also provided him a 401k and profit sharing plan worth between $100,000 and $250,000, according to the report.
In his three years at the firm, it’s earned more than $16 million lobbying on behalf of some of the health care industry’s most powerful interests before the department he’s in line to lead. Though Daschle, himself, did not register to lobby for the firm, he has advised the firm’s clients on health care issues, according to the firm’s website.
Does anyone recall Pbama promising no room in his administration for lobbyists? Surely I can't the only one who heard him say that.
