Seal Kill
I don't know what to make of the whole seal hunt/kill thing that takes place annually. I haven't researched it enough to find out if seals are nearing any type of species endangerment or not. I understand the side that says the hunt is the livelihood of those who partake in this. And I also understand the side that views this hunt as cruel.
What I can offer is a brief comment on a documentary I watched on the seal hunt, and it is this: Can the seal hunters find a bit more humane way to kill their prey instead of walking up to the seals and putting a pick-axe into their heads? And know that this comment or criticism is from someone who has done his share of hunting and fishing. Keeeeey-Riiiist, I just winced when I saw the hunters nail these poor, defenseless animals in the head with a pick-axe.

I reckon I just don't have any problems with killing the seals. Of course I might if I was a seal or a enviro-nut seal lover-don't you think seal lovin' would really bring out a fishy smell?
As far as a more humane way of culling the seals, well the enviro-nuts would protest any killing even as they did the execution methoids in California. Splitting the heads with an ax is about as humane a way as any I suppose.
From what I read the seal hunt is not only an important to the economies in the areas but also is needed to cull the herd. If not for the hunt Canada would be neck deep is seal shit. I wonder if we could think about culling the enviro-nuts because we are knee deep in their shit.

I know the seal hunt is an important economic factor for certain parts of Canada. I just winced, though, when I saw the seals getting nailed in the head with a pick axe. I guess that's what I get for watching a documentary---which was on PBS---by the way, so they're not going to take a pro-seal culling approach, that's for sure.

If you're up for another documentary, and you get CBC Newsworld, tonight and Saturday they're broadcasting a National Film Board documentary on the history of the seal hunt in Newfoundland. I haven't seen it yet, but I've heard lots about it.
It's called My Ancestors were Rogues and Murderers, by Anne Troake, and it will air on The Lens, CBC Newsworld at 10:00 pm ET/PT tonight, Tuesday, April 04, 2006, and at the same time on Saturday, April 08, 2006.
