Duluth, MN: War Dead Placard Causing Tension

A sign inside the office of Democratic candidate for governor of Minnesota, the exceedingly liberal Steve Kelley , is causing quite a stir. Part of the controversy is the wording of the sign which reads: "Remember The Fallen Heroes" and then lists, if you ask me, the tasteless wording "Killed / Wounded / Day" (i.e. Tracking the number of days we have been in Iraq).

Part of the controversy is that the office of exceedingly liberal Steve Kelley is located next to a military recruiting office. Another part of the controversy is that Staff Sergeant Gary Capan, who is the post's commander has asked Scott Cameron, "designer" of the sign, to take the sign down and put it on display elsewhere. Not only does Capan think the sign may hurt recruiting efforts but it is his fellow service men and women whom the sign, in my opinion, denigrates. Cameron has refused to remove and relocate the sign. Is this not just more than similar and reminiscent to the uncaring and disrespectful antics of Fred Phelps?

To be fair, Mr. Cameron is a disabled Vietnam War Veteran.

From the Duluth News Tribune:

I want to make sure that I am clear on one thing: I thank Mr. Cameron for his service to our country, there is no doubt about that. But if he wants to point a finger at a political party for continuing American troops in the war in Vietnam, he need look no further than that of the political affiliation of the office where his sign is displayed.

Cameron told CNN The Following:

I am unable to parse his language in any comprehensible or understandable way. This is, for me, analogous to a parent telling a child, "We don't think you have any athletic talent or ability but we support your efforts to play sports."

A comment posted HERE is on track with my above logic:

Some basic common courtesy and consideration is what I think this issue is all about. And yes, this issue is also about freedom of expression. It is the same freedom of expression that makes Abortion Advocates reel when Pro Life Advocates protest outside abortion clinics. Abortion Advocates have sought barrier zones for Pro Lifers to stay "X" number of feet away from entrances to an abortion clinic. Is the concern of Sgt. Capan so different than that, asking that Cameron's sign be located elsewhere, if for nothing else out of respect and tolerance?

As far as negative political impact, governor wannabe Steve Kelley may rue the day he permitted this sign to be displayed in his office.

Comments:
It's an all-volunteer military, for God's sake. You can only say you support the troops if you support their actions. Otherwise, you are a weasil who can't stand expressing an honest conviction.

Support the troops and support what they are trying to accomplish. Otherwise, admit honestly that you don't support the troops, and you don't support what they are doing.

What's so hard about that?

What? Mr. Drake has finally acquiesced and opened up the comment box. Has he finally had the surgery and gotten a set! It's about time!

Leave it to me to FU in writing within my own comment section. Will try it again:

WIT: you hit the nail on the head precisely. Thanks for the words.

MODESTO: Do I know you?
