Annie Lennox Honored by Nobel Laureates

Singer Annie Lennox was honored by Nobel Peace Prize Laureates, awarding her the 2009 Woman of Peace. APee:

Scottish singer Annie Lennox was presented with the 2009 "Woman of Peace" award on Wednesday at a summit of Nobel Peace Laureates in Berlin for her work raising awareness of HIV/AIDS.

Lennox was chosen for her work in raising awareness of the impact on women and children, especially in South Africa, with her SING campaign enlisting 23 female vocalists to record a song of the same name.

"I want to express my profound gratitude and deep humility," the former Eurythmics singer said. "I honour all the women working around the globe to reduce the effects of this pandemics. This is for them, they truly deserve it."

    [...]

Lennox, 54, was also presented with a piece of the Berlin Wall.

"It looks inoffensive like this because it has been painted on, but for a long time this was part of a wall of fear," Berlin mayor Klaus Wowereit said.

And from Deutsche Welle:

Meeting in Berlin, a group of Nobel Peace Prize laureates have awarded singer Annie Lennox their own award for her work with women and children suffering from AIDS in Africa. The World Summit of Nobel Peace Prize Laureates was meeting for the tenth time and the theme of their talks was "breaking down walls and building bridges."

    [...]

Pop singer Annie Lennox was awarded the summit's 2009 Woman of Peace Award in recognition of her work to raise awareness of the impact HIV and AIDS have on women and children. Lennox's SING campaign combines the talent of 23 female vocalists in a recording of "Sing," which was written by Lennox, and has raised $2 billion (1.3 billion euros) since 2003. The money is used to fund treatment, testing and HIV education and prevention programs in South Africa.

Good for Annie. Congrats on the honor. At least she actually accomplished things and did something for the less fortunate for her recognition by the laureates, unlike the Affirmative Action Nobel Peace Prize awarded to Barack Hussein Obama, Junior who did nothing to deserve it.

I've always liked Annie Lennox. I think she is an incredibly talented performer.

Astute viewers of "The Sopranos", season four, episode "Eloise" may remember they used her song "Little Bird." It's got that undercurrent of the pushing, thumping, driving-forward beat that I like so much. It begins on a minimalistic level with various instruments and elements slowly being added in until it becomes a full, rich, kick-ass whole. This song rocks...

Dude. You're musical tastes are all over the place. wouldyou mind if I asked how old you are or what age group? You go back to Sinatra sometimes and other times know about a band that just came out of nowhere that hit the international scene. Who and what groups do you listen to and how do you know so much about so many artists?

EC, I am ending my third decade on the planet early next year. That's the best you'll get from me on the age question. ;-)

Re: music. I have to give my Mom and late Dad a lot of credit for music. I hated the stuff they listened to when I was a kid: Sinatra, big band, Ray Charles, classical, the Andrews Sisters, Tony Bennett...stuff like that. God how I hated the music of my parents.

But now...I realize what they listened to is some of the finest music ever made: Sinatra, Mel Torme, Nat King Cole, Rosemary Clooney, my dad loved Sousa marches and classical. So I give my parents a big credit for exposing me to music that I hated when I was a kid, but now include it in my every day listening.

My tastes run from ACDC to ZZ Top with The Clash, The Strokes, Talking Heads, Alice in Chains, Alice Cooper, the Dandy Warhols, Sinatra, Dean Martin, The Mills Brothers (you've prob never heard of them, my Mom loves them), Dido, Rage Against the Machine, Gnarls Barkley, Kylie Minogue, Christina Aguilera...heck I even like some of Marilyn Manson's work. So my taste in music pretty much runs the gamit of everything. While I can appreciate almost all genres of music doesn't mean I may like a particular artist, but I can appreciate their talent. But yeah, I listen to a lot of different music, some old, some not so old, and some that no one has ever heard of.

What about you?

I'm just entering my third decade. I sure enjoyed my twenties. Doesn't fel all that different from the 20s.

I like many of the groups and solos you mention. I'd add U2, Fall Out Boy, Shinedown, Radiohead, Adele, Metallica, Ozzy, Dimond Head. Lou Reed rules.
