BALI, Indonesia – A global tax on carbon dioxide emissions was urged to help save the Earth from catastrophic man-made global warming at the United Nations climate conference. A panel of UN participants on Thursday urged the adoption of a tax that would represent “a global burden sharing system, fair, with solidarity, and legally binding to all nations.”
“Finally someone will pay for these [climate related] costs,” Othmar Schwank, a global tax advocate, told Inhofe EPW Press Blog following the panel discussion titled “A Global CO2 Tax.” Schwank is a consultant with the Switzerland based Mauch Consulting firm
Schwank said at least “$10-$40 billion dollars per year” could be generated by the tax, and wealthy nations like the U.S. would bear the biggest burden based on the “polluters pay principle.”
The U.S. and other wealthy nations need to “contribute significantly more to this global fund,” Schwank explained. He also added, “It is very essential to tax coal.”

However, ideas like a global tax and the overall UN climate agenda met strong opposition Thursday from a team of over 100 prominent international scientists who warned the UN that attempting to control the Earth's climate was "ultimately futile."
The scientists wrote, “The IPCC's conclusions are quite inadequate as justification for implementing policies that will markedly diminish future prosperity. In particular, it is not established that it is possible to significantly alter global climate through cuts in human greenhouse gas emissions." The scientists, many of whom are current or former members of the UN Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC), sent the December 13 letter to the UN Secretary-General.

The environmental group Friends of the Earth, in attendance in Bali, also advocated the transfer of money from rich to poor nations on Wednesday.
“A climate change response must have at its heart a redistribution of wealth and resources,” said Emma Brindal, a climate justice campaigner coordinator for Friends of the Earth.
Calls for global regulations and taxes are not new at the UN. Former Vice President Al Gore, who arrived Thursday at the Bali conference, reiterated this week his call to place a price on carbon dioxide emissions.
In 2000, then French President Jacques Chirac said the UN’s Kyoto Protocol represented "the first component of an authentic global governance." Former EU Environment Minister Margot Wallstrom said, "Kyoto is about the economy, about leveling the playing field for big businesses worldwide." Canadian Prime Minster Stephen Harper once dismissed Kyoto as a “socialist scheme.”

MIT climate scientist Dr. Richard Lindzen warned about these types of carbon regulations earlier this year. "Controlling carbon is a bureaucrat's dream. If you control carbon, you control life," Lindzen said in March 2007.

Former Colorado Senator Tim Wirth reportedly said in 1990, "We've got to ride the global warming issue. Even if the theory of global warming is wrong, we will be doing the right thing — in terms of economic policy and environmental policy."
Oh, gee - huh - the overweight, bloviated, huge carbon-footprinter, pie-faced former Vice President Albert Gore, Junior, was in Bali, too? How'd he get there? By bicycle? Commercial air travel? (Insert laugh track - huge laugh).
Stephen Harper had it right, Kyoto is a Socialist Scheme. Why did the "Earthers" change their catch-phrase from "global warming" to "climate change"? Could it be that the term "global warming" just doesn't fool enough people - people who today in the midwest and northeast portions of the United States are experiencing sub-zero temperatures and digging themselves out of dump and dump after dump of snowfall? Nope - "global warming" doesn't explain that.
Could it be that the term "global warming" didn't help the fact that ice shelfs melt and...brace yourselves people, brace yourselves...then re-freeze? Could it be that the term "global warming" didn't help that while exterior ice shelfs may have been melting, their interior has been freezing and growing?
So the "global warming" panic crowd had to change their very own Chicken Little term to the euphemism "climate change." The climate changes - really? The ice cubes in my rum and coke melt, too - so... this must be a sign of
The climate changes, temperatures vary. Is the weather where you live the same every day? Of course not. We - the earth, rather - is emerging from an era of a little ice age from 1850. And, in the relative terms of "earth age", 1850 is not that long ago.
Now...according to those who, unlike Gore, have degrees and an educational background in this area, guess what happens after an ice age. Go ahead, take a wild guess - - - slight warming trends follow ice ages! Amazing, isn't it? It's so scientific that it's simply too simple for the Alarmists to grasp. Why, acknowledging this little fact completely negates and voids their little scheme of taxation and redistributing wealth. Huh - funny how that works, isn't it?
Instead of recognizing that the slight warming trend is cyclical and one that has historical roots, the Alarmists blame you and me. They should be blaming themselves, because it is the Alarmists who are polluting the globe every time they convene for another one of their Panic Attack Induced Conferences, usually held at some exotic locale.
They all travel to the location mostly by private or chartered jet. Once there, they travel in motorcades, gasoline sucking limos and dine on feasts that - by comparison - would make a Roman Bacchanalia seem like a pauper's meal. And their conclusive consensus? TAX EVERYBODY! Whew - who didn't see that coming?
Usually, I only link to, and use, Wikipedia as a general type of reference point - a starting point - as Wiki is not the Encyclopedia Britannica nor is it a time-tested, thoroughly fact-based forum. Anyone can edit any information on Wiki. But I would encourage people to familiarize themselves with the basics of Milankovitch Cycles, cycles that consider the effects of the movement of the earth and its correlation to climate fluctuations.
The earth is not "set" in a permanent, fixed rotation; it changes. These changes affect the climate. The sun - especially sunspot activity - affect the climate. These two things - the position of the earth and the sun - has a far greater effect on climate than what Albert Gore, Junior and the UN want us to believe. Gore and the UN want us to believe that WE are causing this.
Remember how the Alarmists predicted 2007 to be one of the worst - absolute worst - years for hurricanes, especially in the United States? They sure missed the mark on that prediction...missed it by light years, as they did with their prediction that 2006 would also be a horrendous season for numerous hurricanes. (1)
One does not have to search the internet too hard or too long to find an abundance of stories where scientists who refute "climate change" are not allowed to speak at such austere events like the one in Bali. It's not difficult to find story after story by scientists who simply don't buy what the Alarmist crowd is selling.
The Alarmists on this "climate change" bandwagon are doing what they are doing for one reason, and the answer is NOT the climate or temperature change. It's ALL ABOUT THE MONEY.
Albert Gore, Junior is not a scientist. I wouldn't even call him an "expert" on global warming. He is a poor man's version of P.T. Barnum. At least with Barnum, the paying audience received, in exchange for their money, some entertainment. Gore offers nothing in return.
Would you let Gore fill a dental cavity in one of your teeth? Would you allow him to perform a root canal on you?
Would you let Gore operate on you? Would you permit Gore to remove your gall bladder? Would you allow him to remove a mole from your skin?
Would you let Gore re-wire your home? Do a tune-up on your car? Do you even trust this guy to make you a good cup of coffee?
Gore and his band of Chicken Littles are attempting to sell the biggest pile of BS scam ever to a gullible public. The same gullible public that actually stops and thinks for a minute when you tell them that gullible isn't in the dictionary.
Why won't Gore debate, one-on-one, with any scientist who disagrees with him? He's been offered the opportunity to debate with those who disagree with him, yet he has refused every time.
Why is Gore afraid to debate those who disagree with him on global warming? He has his charts, his Power Point presentation and his laser pointer. Why so Chicken - Al? What are you afraid of? Why turn down the chance to make your skeptics look like idiots if you're so cocksure of yourself? The answer is because Gore is a huckster, a charlatan, a fake, a phony, an Alarmist.
Othmar...find yourself a small, dark room - take Gore with you - and Schwank off.

I "second" you comments above. It's amazing how the Lems just turn a deaf ear to anyone with a scientific background (not me, I am referring to the other experts in the story) who disagree that humans are responsible for the slight warming trend. They are today's Fascists.
